Budget process continues with negotiations with Senate, governor
State Rep. Karl Bohnak this week cast a key vote to approve the House budget proposal for next year. The plan continues universal breakfast and lunch programs in schools, fully funds Medicaid, and ensures communities have the resources they need to fix local infrastructure.
“Our budget plan keeps kids fed, Medicaid online, and infrastructure improvements moving in the right direction,” said Bohnak, R-Deerton. “In a time where our U.P. community is facing so much uncertainty; we deserve a budget plan that locks in so many of the key services people rely on. No child should go hungry at school, no senior should worry if they can afford their medications, and no community should be left with broken roads and no state support.”
The House budget increases Medicaid funding by $1.2 billion to meet growing caseloads, while investing in anti-fraud efforts and implementing requirements to ensure long-term sustainability. The plan also provides a $250 per-pupil increase, bringing the foundation allowance to $10,300, while continuing universal school meals and school resource officers.
After last year’s bipartisan agreement added more than $2 billion in ongoing road funding, the House budget adds another $100 million to continue addressing Michigan’s road funding gap.
“While there is still a long road of negotiations ahead of us, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate and Gov. Whitmer on these important funding decisions,” Bohnak said.
The House budget plan now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
